With my plan to search the forest myself dead and buried, I ended up in Rowanâs flat. Mum had reluctantly given me permission to go out as long as I didnât try tracking the creature myself, but I knew better than to think Iâd be able to find our elusive monster with the police and half the coven swarming all over the woods.
Equally unlikely were my chances of talking to Mavis, who remained unconscious but stable, according to the hospital staff.
âI canât believe the beast attacked a Head Witch,â Rowan said when Iâd finished telling her. âThatâs messed up.â
âI canât figure out how it vanished.â I watched from the sofa while Tansy amused herself by peering into the tanks and cages in which Rowan kept her spider collection. âI was hovering directly above the forest when it attacked Mavis, but it was gone by the time I landed. Howâs that even possible?â
âIs she likely to survive?â
I grimaced. âThey put her odds at fifty-fifty, but it depends if the creatureâs wounds have other nasty side effects like poison. Rachel didnât make it, after all.â
âWas she one of the Head Witches who didnât like you?â
âNope, I think she was trying to help me.â Guilt jabbed at me again. âShe knew all about magical creatures, but I was too suspicious to ask for her advice.â
âWas that why she went out alone then?â Rowan gave a low whistle. âItâs lucky you found her when you did.â
âWish Iâd got there sooner.â I rested my head against the back of the sofa. âI swear I should have landed right on top of that creature. It shouldnât have got away.â
âYou might be the one in hospital if it hadnât,â Rowan murmured.
Fair point. âAt least if Iâd fought back, I wouldnât be the one to take the fall if she dies.â
She raised a brow. âIs that what the other Head Witches said?â
âI havenât spoken to them since the attack.â I slumped against the cushions. âMum checked nobody else had wandered off and then left the inn before they started asking too many questions. Thereâs no way she can keep the details quiet though⦠and I donât even know what weâre going to say at tomorrowâs meeting. If there is one.â
âThis canât be the first time a Head Witch has got injured on the job, can it?â
âNo, but itâs certainly my first time handling anything like this.â I ought to ask Grandma if sheâd ever had a similar experience, but I had zero desire to go near the office again today.
âNo kidding.â She exhaled. âYou canât be faulted for not knowing Mavis would try to track the creature alone.â
âIâm sure the press will find a way to blame me anyway.â
âYeah⦠Vanessaâs fingerprints are all over that interview.â Rowan pursed her lips. âI donât think she set that monster loose though. Nor my mother. Sure, theyâre capable of it, but risking the life of another Head Witch is way over the line.â
âTrue, but Iâm all out of other theories,â I said.
