With my plan to search the forest myself dead and buried, I ended up in Rowan’s flat. Mum had reluctantly given me permission to go out as long as I didn’t try tracking the creature myself, but I knew better than to think I’d be able to find our elusive monster with the police and half the coven swarming all over the woods.

Equally unlikely were my chances of talking to Mavis, who remained unconscious but stable, according to the hospital staff.

“I can’t believe the beast attacked a Head Witch,” Rowan said when I’d finished telling her. “That’s messed up.”

“I can’t figure out how it vanished.” I watched from the sofa while Tansy amused herself by peering into the tanks and cages in which Rowan kept her spider collection. “I was hovering directly above the forest when it attacked Mavis, but it was gone by the time I landed. How’s that even possible?”

“Is she likely to survive?”

I grimaced. “They put her odds at fifty-fifty, but it depends if the creature’s wounds have other nasty side effects like poison. Rachel didn’t make it, after all.”

“Was she one of the Head Witches who didn’t like you?”

“Nope, I think she was trying to help me.” Guilt jabbed at me again. “She knew all about magical creatures, but I was too suspicious to ask for her advice.”

“Was that why she went out alone then?” Rowan gave a low whistle. “It’s lucky you found her when you did.”

“Wish I’d got there sooner.” I rested my head against the back of the sofa. “I swear I should have landed right on top of that creature. It shouldn’t have got away.”

“You might be the one in hospital if it hadn’t,” Rowan murmured.

Fair point. “At least if I’d fought back, I wouldn’t be the one to take the fall if she dies.”

She raised a brow. “Is that what the other Head Witches said?”

“I haven’t spoken to them since the attack.” I slumped against the cushions. “Mum checked nobody else had wandered off and then left the inn before they started asking too many questions. There’s no way she can keep the details quiet though… and I don’t even know what we’re going to say at tomorrow’s meeting. If there is one.”

“This can’t be the first time a Head Witch has got injured on the job, can it?”

“No, but it’s certainly my first time handling anything like this.” I ought to ask Grandma if she’d ever had a similar experience, but I had zero desire to go near the office again today.

“No kidding.” She exhaled. “You can’t be faulted for not knowing Mavis would try to track the creature alone.”

“I’m sure the press will find a way to blame me anyway.”

“Yeah… Vanessa’s fingerprints are all over that interview.” Rowan pursed her lips. “I don’t think she set that monster loose though. Nor my mother. Sure, they’re capable of it, but risking the life of another Head Witch is way over the line.”

“True, but I’m all out of other theories,” I said.
